The Epifanes Rubbed Effect Varnish provides a rich, hand rubbed finished to interior surfaces while also featuring a hard, abrasion and alcohol resistant finish that is designed to protect all marine woods for years to come. The best results are obtained by applying the Epifanes Rubbed Effect Varnish on bare wood over a build up of three coats of Epifanes Gloss Varnish (available as 500ml and 1L) or Epifanes Woodfinish Gloss (available as 500ml and 1L).
The Epifanes Rubbed Effect Varnish is a one-component interior varnish that has a urethane alkyd resin base, to ensure a hard and beautiful clear amber satin sheen finish. It is recommended to apply this varnish with a longhaired soft brush or an air spray due to the required wet film thickness.

- Begin with a clean surface well sanded to 220 grit smoothness.
- Seal by thinning the first coat of Epifanes Gloss or Woodfinish Gloss 50% with Epifanes Brush Thinner for Paint and Varnish.
- Apply a second sealer coat, thinned 25%.
- Apply a third coat, thinned 10-15%. Allow 24 hours between coats.
- For maximum grain filling, apply one more additional coat of either Gloss Varnish or Woodfinish Gloss, thinned 0-5%.
- Apply one or two coats of Rubbed Effect Varnish.
- Sand lightly with 320 grit paper between coats.
- Prepare the surface with 320 grit sandpaper.
- Degrease with Epifanes Spray Thinner for Paint and Varnish or denatured alcohol to remove any oil or waxes that may have been used on the existing finish.
- Apply one or two coats of Epifanes Rubbed Effect Varnish.
